prof. dr hab. Andrzej Borówka

Graduated from the Medical University of Warsaw in 1969. Specialist in general surgery since 1975. In the same year, began working under the supervision of Prof. Tadeusz Krzeski at the Urology Ward of the Provincial Hospital (currently Prof. Witold Orłowski Hospital in Warsaw). In 1979, this ward became the home of the Urology Clinic of the Centre of Postgraduate Medical Education (CMKP). Obtained the title of specialist urologist in 1978. In 1979, was awarded a doctorate, and in 1982, a habilitation.

From 1981 to 1995, served as head of the Urology Clinic ward at the Medical University of Warsaw. Was awarded the academic title of professor in 1989. Since 1995, head of the Urology Ward at the Central Railway Hospital (currently: Międzyleski Specialist Hospital, MSS). Since 1997, head of the Urology Clinic (UC) of CMKP, based at Prof. W. Orłowski Hospital.

In 2011, established a urology ward at the Frédéric Chopin Hospital of the European Health Centre (ECZ) in Otwock. This ward became part of the UC CMKP.

Prof. Andrzej Borówka has been a member of the Polish Urological Association (PTU) since 1975. Between 1984 and 1997, together with his closest colleagues, organized and conducted a series of Paediatric Urology Symposia, which also featured distinguished paediatric urologists from abroad.

For 12 years, served as chairman of the Warsaw (currently Masovian) Branch of the PTU. In 1992, initiated the founding of the Endourology and ESWL Section within the PTU — chaired this Section for 8 years and organized a series of Endourology Symposia attended by internationally renowned lecturers. In 1996, inspired the PTU Executive Board to establish the Prof. Tadeusz Krzeski Award, to this day considered the most prestigious scientific distinction of the PTU, awarded annually to the authors of the best doctoral dissertations. From 2000 to 2008, served as president of the PTU. From 1992 to 2000, acted as PTU delegate to the Société Internationale d'Urologie; from 1997 to 2004, as PTU delegate to the EBU; and from 1998 to 2002, as a member of the Strategy Planning Office of the European Association of Urology (EAU).

In 1992, was appointed National Consultant in the field of urology — after 20 years, resigned from this position. From 2001 to 2007, was a member of the Central Commission for Degrees and Titles, and from 2005 to 2016, a member of the Scientific Council of the Minister of Health.

Prof. Borówka has served as supervisor of urology specialization programmes, promoter in doctoral proceedings, supervisor in habilitation proceedings, and reviewer in doctoral and habilitation proceedings as well as in proceedings for the conferral of the academic title of professor.

Prof. Borówka has introduced a number of innovative surgical methods and original modifications of several widely used surgical treatment approaches to Polish urology.

The main areas of scientific and professional interest of Prof. Borówka have been and continue to be oncological urology and endourology, as well as urological education. He is the author or co-author of over 370 scientific papers published in peer-reviewed medical journals in Poland and abroad, as well as approximately 50 book chapters and several hundred congress abstract submissions.

Prof. Borówka is an honorary member of the Polish Urological Association, the Polish Ultrasound Society, the Society of Polish Surgeons, the Polish Society of Surgical Oncology, the Polish Society of Paediatric Urology, and the Czech Urological Society, as well as a recipient of the highest honorary distinction of the EBU.

He is the recipient of numerous scientific awards and decorations, including the Gold Cross of Merit in 2011, and in 2013 was honoured with the "Laudabilis" distinction awarded by the Warsaw Regional Medical Chamber.
