Graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the Medical University of Warsaw in 1969. Doctorate in 1975, habilitation in 1987, title of professor in 1995. Specialist in general surgery, clinical transplantology, and oncological surgery. European expert in Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Surgery (FEBS).

Employed from 1969 to the present at the Department and Clinic of General, Transplant and Liver Surgery (formerly the 2nd Surgical Clinic) at the Medical University of Warsaw.

From 1996 to 2002, Vice-Dean; from 2002 to 2008, Dean of the 1st Faculty of Medicine; from 2008 to 2016, Rector of the Medical University of Warsaw.

Main areas of scientific interest: short bowel syndrome; acute pancreatitis; intraoperative liver ultrasonography; laparoscopic surgery; biliary tract reconstruction; liver transplantation from deceased and living donors; liver and biliary tract tumours; other gastrointestinal cancers.

Full member of the Polish Academy of Sciences; corresponding member of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences; member of the Warsaw Scientific Society.

Honorary member of 9 foreign scientific societies and 5 Polish scientific societies. From 2001 to 2003, President of the Polish Transplantation Society; from 2011 to 2013, President of the Society of Polish Surgeons; from 2016 to 2017, President of the European Surgical Association. Doctor Honoris Causa of the Jan Kochanowski University in Kielce (2019).

Author or co-author of 537 papers, editor or co-editor of 70 books, 772 congress presentations.

Promoter of 12 doctoral dissertations, supervisor of 8 habilitations; 10 associates have been awarded the title of professor.

Decorations and awards: Commander's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, Officer's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, Awards of the Minister of Health and the Minister of Science and Higher Education, Palmes Académiques of the Minister of National Education of the French Republic, the Papal Medal of Pope Francis "Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice," and numerous other distinctions.
